AIARE 1 is the standard entry course for backcountry travelers, typically three days (about 24 hours) split between classroom and field. You learn to plan a trip, identify avalanche terrain, recognize signs of instability, use the AIARE decision-making framework, and perform a companion rescue. It is designed for recreationists who want to travel in avalanche terrain with a trained group.
It is a decision-making course, not a snow-science degree. The goal is to travel more safely and to keep learning afterward.
