Expert riders handle the whole mountain, from double-black steeps and tight trees to chutes, couloirs, and deep powder, adapting technique fluidly to whatever the conditions present. Many experts move beyond the resort boundary, which is where ski technique stops being the limiting factor and avalanche education and backcountry travel skills become essential.
If the backcountry is the goal, the next ladder, avalanche education, is not optional; expert in-bounds skill does not make terrain safe.
