Cross-Country (Nordic) Ski Checklist

Classic and skate XC skiing on groomed trails is an aerobic workout. You generate your own heat, so you layer lighter than for a lift day.

Dial in your grip (kick wax or skin skis), dress to vent, and carry water and a small repair kit for the loop.

Common questions

Do I need to wax cross-country skis?
Classic skis need grip in the kick zone, either kick wax matched to the snow temperature or a built-in grip texture. Skin skis and waxless (fish-scale) bases skip kick wax entirely, which is why many beginners prefer them; all skis still benefit from occasional glide wax.
